Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)

Emergency services agencies and Triangle area mental health professionals provide the Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) program to EMS/rescue, fire, hospital emergency department, and law enforcement services. CISM is also provided to spouses and significant others of these professionals. The focus of CISM is to minimize the harmful effects of job stress, particularly in extraordinary situations or after having responded to a critical incident.

A "critical incident" is defined as one which results in experiencing unusually strong emotional involvement such as:

There is no charge for this service. All debriefings are conducted by specially trained personnel and are strictly confidential. Debriefings are not an evaluation or critique of the incident. Formal debriefings should be conducted within seventy-two hours of an incident.
