Community Development Work Study
Triangle J Council of Governments administered the Community Development Work-Study program that placed minority and disadvantaged graduate public administration and planning students from area universities into internships with local government and non-profit organizations.
Local government and non-profit community and economic development organizations received free assistance from graduate students studying public administration and planning. The students received:
- paid tuition and fees
- a stipend
- reimbursement for books and travel
- valuable work experience in the fields they were studying
Funding for the students and an administrative fee to Triangle J was provided through a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Triangle J and the universities helped match eligible students with the placement agencies and provided periodic seminars for students that related their coursework with their internship, and prepared them for finding permanent employment when they graduated. Triangle J also tracked student progress, kept track of expenses and administered reporting to HUD.
