Jordan Lake Stakeholder Project
Triangle J launched the Jordan Lake Stakeholder Project in response to the Jordan Lake Nutrient Response Model. This model demonstrated that the population and economic growth that are projected to occur in the Jordan Lake watershed over the coming decades will further threaten the ability of the lake to support its designated uses as a major regional drinking water supply, recreational resource, and aquatic habitat due to increases in point and nonpoint source nutrient loads from that growth.
Triangle J, with the assistance of the Piedmont Triad Council of Governments, worked with the NC Division of Water Quality to provide a framework for addressing these concerns by creating a stakeholders group whose purpose was to develop a nutrient management strategy for the Jordan Lake Watershed which could be presented as a recommendation to the NC Environmental Management Commission (EMC).
By establishing and engaging a diverse group of stakeholders representing a wide range of interests in the Jordan Lake Watershed, these stakeholders would work to create a Jordan Lake TMDL, nutrient targets, and a nutrient management strategy for Jordan Lake and the Jordan Lake Watershed that would complement the EMC's schedule for adopting a TMDL for the Upper New Hope Arm of Jordan Lake and a nutrient management strategy for the Jordan Lake Watershed.
The NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources provided initial funding for this project through Federal 104(b)(3) Grant #CP994570-98. The River Network provided additional funding that allowed us to expand the stakeholder group and broaden our efforts through Watershed Assistance Grant #1922.
