Solid Waste Program
Triangle J's Solid Waste Program encourages reduction in the use and disposal of materials in our region and assists local governments in decreasing the cost of their solid waste management programs through regional cooperation.
The program initiates and manages projects, writes grant proposals, conducts research, and writes reports. Past activities include:
Triangle J has convened meetings of the Triangle Region Solid Waste Planners Committee since 1991 to address specific solid waste issues. The Committee's members are local government solid waste planners from throughout the TJCOG region. The Committee was responsible for proposing and implementing a regional household hazardous waste program, producing several regional reports regarding solid waste management, and initiating the February 2000 Solid Waste Future Search. The Committee is currently working on coordinating public education on solid waste management, evaluating options for electronics recycling, analyzing opportunities for reusing scrap wood within the region, and determining desirable locations for materials recovery facilities in the region.

PROJECT TIMELINE:
- 2000 :: Co-authored "Developing Trash-Free Events: A Planning Guide for North Carolina Communities and Event Planners"
- March 1995 :: Served on the Conference Planning Committee for "Finding Common Ground: Toward a Sustainable North Carolina" at UNC Chapel Hill
- 1994 :: Served on the Recycling Issues Working Group for the development of the Comprehensive Strategic Economic Development Plan of the North Carolina Economic Development Board
- 1993 :: Coordinated a regional project funded by the American Plastics Council to test various systems for curbside residential collection of recyclable plastic
- 1993 :: Set up thirteen public demonstration sites in the Triangle to test and evaluate donated benches, car stops, and other products made of recycled plastic lumber.
- 1992-1994 :: Established and spearheaded the Purchasing Agents Recycling Committee
